A Playful Armadillo?

One just doesn’t think of armadillos as being playful.

But watch as Rollie, the 3-banded armadillo, plays with his pink plastic teddy bear at the NEW Zoo and Adventure Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  It’ll make you smile.

If you live in the area and would like to volunteer, the Green Bay NEW Zoo and Adventure Park offers volunteer opportunities as well as internships.  Zoo volunteers can be 8 to 14 years old if they have adult supervision or do not need adult supervision if they are 15 years or older.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Helping with the zoo’s special events, such as Zoo Boo and the Holiday Fest
  • Assisting with special projects around the zoo, including cleaning, maintenance, art projects, etc.
  • Assisting with educational programs, such as the Summer Zoo Camp and Zoo Snooze overnights
  • Helping with clerical tasks and record keeping as needed
  • Helping in the Mayan Restaurant and Visitor Center
  • Driving the Train or running the Carousel
  • Supervising the Giraffe Stand
  • Other tasks (always ask if there is something you are interested in – an opportunity could be created specifically for you)

Due to safety and legal reasons, volunteers do not work with animals.  However, individuals who are more interested in working directly with zoo animals could consider an internship.

Internship Opportunities:

Internships at the NEW Zoo are available for adults 18 years and older.  They are nonpaid and of varying duration and may be eligible for academic credit depending upon the academic institution.   Internships typically require a commitment of 15 to 30 hours per week.

Internship opportunities include:

  • Coordinating the activities of zoo volunteers
  • Being involved with zoo communications, marketing and social media
  • Animal husbandry
  • Leading educational tours, programs and encounters
