In Honor of World Lion Day, August 10th

A Lion Movie Double Feature for World Lion Day.

This is the story of renowned wildlife conservationists George and Joy Adamson and the orphaned lion cubs that they raised in Kenya.  The movies Born Free (1966) and the sequel Living Free (1972) were based upon the books of the same name by Joy Adamson.  These are wonderful movies and I encourage you to watch them.  They are not available on YouTube, but may be rented online from Amazon Instant Video or Vudu or on DVD from Netflix.  You will definitely need to have a box of tissues by your side!

Here are several movie trailers and excerpts from YouTube to spark your curiosity.

Spoiler alert:  The last 2 minutes of the movie:

and the sequel, Living Free (1972)

Additional Information:

It was the actor and actress from Born Free (Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna) who put Christian the Lion Cub’s owners in contact with George Adamson and who let Christian stay at their estate while waiting for permission from the Kenyan government to allow Christian’s release in Kenya.  The Travers were asked to reprise their roles as George and Joy Adamson in the movie sequel, Living Free, but declined.

These two movies will be even more poignant to watch when you learn what ultimately became of Joy and George Adamson.  Tragically, Joy was murdered in 1980 in Shaba National Park in Kenya by a disgruntled laborer who she had recently fired because she suspected him of having stolen a camera. Shockingly, George was also murdered just 9 years later in 1989 by poachers in Kora National Park in Kenya.

Joy Adamson’s ashes were divided into two parts and buried in Meru National Park, half next to the grave of Elsa the lioness and half next to the grave of Pippa the cheetah, another cub that Joy had raised.  George Adamson is buried in Kora National Park near his brother Terrence and two of their beloved lion friends.
